Meet Luna Rey, a stunning model and performer who has taken the alternative scene by storm. From her early days in the Hooters Calendar to becoming an official Suicide Girl and modeling for Playboy, Luna has embraced her unique style and passion for goth culture. In this exclusive interview with The Black Ravens, she opens up about her experiences in the industry, performing at Hollywood's Bar Sinister, and offers advice to those looking to follow in her footsteps.
I was around 18 when I got started in modeling and I had my first photo shoot for the 2019 Hooters Calendar. I thought it was such a cool experience to get my hair and makeup done for the first time and see the final results for the calendar. A couple years, and tattoos, later I decided to look into alternative modeling options and I found Suicide Girls. I had submitted a few sets as a Hopeful, and on my fourth submission my photoset was bought and I became an official SG! Modeling for Playboy is another fun outlet I got into in order to meet more people in the industry and share my different styles outside of Suicide Girls.
Bar Sinister is definitely one of my most favorite places to visit when I’m in Los Angeles. Official Suicide Girls are hired as go-go dancers and that’s how I got into the Sinister scene. Performing in the cubes is always a blast and I get to meet other fellow Suicide Girls and some L.A. locals. Kent Kaliber, the host of Bar Sinister, is the sweetest and always makes sure everyone is safe and having a good time. In all, getting paid to dance to goth music in sexy black outfits isn’t a bad gig!
To me, gothic culture means going outside the “norms” of society and not being afraid to be yourself. This could be with the way you dress, the movies or music you like, or whatever interests you have that people might consider strange. I like to express my love of things that are spooky or gothic in the themes and outfits I choose for shoots. It’s a creative way for me to share the things that make me happy.
Some of the best times I’ve had in my modeling and dancing career have mostly taken place in Los Angeles. My favorite trip so far has been for a Shootfest that’s thrown yearly by another amazing model, Bella Donna. Girls and photographers travel from around the world to stay in a massive Airbnb and we spend days shooting multiple photo sets, either solo or with each other. It’s like a giant sleepover with your friends and everyone is working hard but having the most fun together! Towards the end of our stay there’s also a Shootfest after party thrown at Bar Sinister, which is an extra bonus for those of us who already love it there and it gives the girls from out of town a chance to visit and dance.
If you’re wanting to get into modeling or dancing I say just go for it and don’t be nervous to put yourself out there. It may seem a little scary at first but it’s all worth it when you’re doing something you’re passionate about. If you don’t know where to start, it’s helpful to reach out to people in the industry that you trust and ask for recommendations on who to work with or which companies to get involved with. It’s all about taking risks and doing what’s best for yourself and your career.
